What Does the Bible Say About Grace?
The doctrine of grace stands at the center of the Bible. It is the theme that connects every book and the thread that winds through every verse. In the original Old Testament language, grace comes from a word meaning “lovingkindness,” which is often used to describe the Lord’s character. God’s grace flows from the essence of his being: “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:6, ESV).
In the New Testament, grace is translated from a term meaning “divine favor,” “goodwill,” “that which gives joy,” and “that which is a free gift.” Grace is the undeserved gift of God. The greatest of God’s gifts of grace is His Son, Jesus Christ.
This simple acronym is frequently cited as a biblical definition of grace: God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.
The Bible tells us that God’s grace is manifested in the person of Jesus Christ: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth … Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:14-17, NIV).
Saved by Grace
By God’s grace, sinners are saved and reborn into the family of God. God offers eternal life to all who believe in His son, Jesus. Through Christ’s substitutionary death on the cross, God pronounces “not guilty” all who repent, confess their sins, and believe in Jesus as their Lord and Savior. As sinners, we deserve to die in our sins, but God’s grace gives us everlasting life through Jesus Christ.
Acts 15:11
But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will. (ESV)
Romans 3:24
Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. (NLT)

The Word of His Grace
In the book of Acts, the message of the gospel is called “the word of his grace” and “the gospel of the grace of God.”

Acts 20:32
And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. (ESV)
Abounding in Grace
God’s grace is abundant. There is no end to the goodness, mercy, love, healing, forgiveness, and countless other ways he pours out his blessings on His people. Through the endless reserves of God’s grace, he enriches our lives and unites us together in his family, the body of Christ.
