on the Mount Jesus warned us about three things we sometimes do for the wrong reason.

In Matthew 6:2 Jesus said, “When you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets.”  So, number one – Do not give to be honored by others.

In Matthew 6:6, Jesus said, “When you pray, go into your room and close the door.” So the second warning is: Do not pray to be seen by others.

Then in Matthew 6:16, Jesus said, “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do.” Warning number three is: Do not fast to impress others.

All three of these things – giving, praying, fasting – are meant to give God glory, not bring us glory.

There is much greater reward in bringing God glory than ourselves. The praises of men are temporary, but God’s rewards are everlasting.

“The praises of men are temporary, but God’s rewards are everlasting.”

Matthew 6:1

“Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.”
