EYE FOR AN EYE – BIBLICAL MEANING AND SIGNIFICANCE.

“Οφθαλμός αντί οφθαλμού”

προέρχεται από τον Κώδικα του Χαμουραμπί και βρίσκεται στα βιβλία της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης της Εξόδου και του Λευιτικού. Αναφέρεται επίσης στην Επί του Όρους Ομιλία  του Ιησού, που βρίσκεται στην Καινή Διαθήκη. Το νόημά του στη Βίβλο ήταν απλώς, η τιμωρία ή η ποινή πρέπει να ταιριάζει εξίσου με το έγκλημα. 

Από τη Γραφή,   το εδάφιο Έξοδος 21:23-25  ​​δηλώνει: «Αλλά εάν υπάρχει κακό, τότε θα πληρώσετε ζωή για ζωή, οφθαλμός αντί οφθαλμού, δόντι αντί δόντι, χέρι αντί χέρι, πόδι αντί πόδι, έγκαυμα για έγκαυμα, πληγή για πληγή, ρίγα για ρίγα.”  Τα εδάφια Λευιτικό 24:19-21  απηχούν αυτόν τον ισχυρισμό, «Όποιος τραυματίζει τον πλησίον του πρέπει να τραυματίζεται με τον ίδιο τρόπο: κάταγμα αντί κάταγμα, οφθαλμός αντί οφθαλμού, δόντι αντί δόντι. Αυτός που έχει προκαλέσει τον τραυματισμό πρέπει να υποστεί τον ίδιο τραυματισμό. ”  

Και για τα δύο αποσπάσματα, η φράση χρησιμοποιείται σε περίπτωση δικαστικής υπόθεσης ενώπιον μιας πολιτικής αρχής όπως ένας δικαστής. Το «οφθαλμό αντί οφθαλμού» προοριζόταν επομένως να είναι μια καθοδηγητική ηθική για τους νομοθέτες και τους δικαστές. δεν είχε σκοπό να υποστηρίξει την προσωπική εκδίκηση.  

Επιπλέον, ο Ιησούς καταδικάζει την πρακτική των προσωπικών αντιποίνων στην Επί του Όρους Ομιλία λέγοντας: «Ακούσατε ότι ειπώθηκε: Οφθαλμό αντί οφθαλμού και δόντι αντί δόντι. Αλλά σου λέω μην αντιστέκεσαι σε έναν κακό άνθρωπο. Αν κάποιος σας χαστουκίσει στο δεξί μάγουλο, γυρίστε του και το άλλο μάγουλο. Και αν κάποιος θέλει να σου κάνει μήνυση και να σου πάρει το πουκάμισο, παράδωσε και το παλτό σου. Αν κάποιος σας αναγκάσει να διανύσετε ένα μίλι, πηγαίνετε μαζί του δύο μίλια. Δώσε σε εκείνον που σου ζητά και μην απομακρυνθείς από εκείνον που θέλει να δανειστεί από σένα» ( Ματθαίος 5:38-42 ).

Ο Ιησούς δεν ανακαλεί το διάταγμα της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης «Οφθαλμό αντί οφθαλμού» ( Ματθαίος 5:17 ). Αντίθετα, εκχωρεί την ευθύνη της πολιτικής αρχής (να τιμωρεί τους εγκληματίες σωστά) από την ευθύνη που έχουμε όλοι σε ένα προσωπικό πλαίσιο να αγαπάμε τους γείτονες και τους εχθρούς μας.

Ποια είναι η σημασία του “Μάτι αντί Οφθαλμού;”

Η σημασία αυτής της αρχής είναι η απόλυτη μακροζωία της συνάφειάς της. Τα σύγχρονα δικαστικά μας συστήματα εξακολουθούν να τηρούν αυτήν την κατευθυντήρια αρχή κατά τον καθορισμό μιας δικαστικής ποινής. Το «οφθαλμό αντί οφθαλμού», έχει κυριολεκτικά επηρεάσει τις κατάλληλες ποινικές αποφάσεις εκατομμυρίων νομικών υποθέσεων εδώ και χιλιάδες χρόνια, και δικαίως.  

Αυτό που μπορεί να προκαλεί έκπληξη σχετικά με αυτή τη δικαστική εντολή, αν και πολλοί θα τη θεωρούσαν πλέον κοινή λογική, είναι ότι δεν τη χρησιμοποιούν όλες οι χώρες. Ακόμη και σήμερα, υπάρχουν μέρη στον κόσμο όπου η τιμωρία δεν αντιστοιχεί εύλογα στο έγκλημα.
