Hiding Under an Umbrella
Genesis 3:24
The cherubim, the covering angels of God, guarded the path to the tree of life with flaming swords. Even if fallen man had eaten from the tree of life, he would have lived forever without going through the cross. After eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, if Adam and Eve had also eaten from the tree of life, they would have lived in the same condition after eating the fruit of knowledge, even though they had the knowledge of good and evil, there would have been no life. They could not come and eat it until the cherubim guarded the road and covered it. God killed an animal, and made clothing for men and women of skin, and gave them an umbrella. Two naked men who walked in human depravity can now eat from the tree of life because of the umbrella. After this umbrella, God never mentioned anything about Adam and Eve, because the blood was shed and redeemed, and that umbrella hid them in God’s mercy.
Remember how Adam and Eve were hiding and alone after they sinned, and God came looking for them. He received them and he clothed them with an umbrella that came through blood. We receive the same umbrella through the shedding of the blood of the Lamb of God, a reconciling umbrella that not only brings us to heaven but brings us to God in our earthly experience; An umbrella that reconciled the prodigal son to the Father’s love, grace and mercy.
While no man seeks God on his own, God seeks us and brings us home to experience the freedom of sonship with all the opportunities of that heavenly home.
