Faithfully Established
Jeremiah 48:1
- When a lay believer thinks of rest, he thinks of resting in faith. A Christian rests in faith, that is true, but the word does not teach that resting in faith is not the main issue in life. There is something deeper and more essential to our experience than resting in faith. Of course, this is not to reduce the rest of faith or to move away from resting in it, but it is to reveal something more elevated.
Imagine how many people may rest in human faith, but have not allowed their lives to be shaped by a person, that is, Christ. They rest on something, which they remember as human and sufficient in that kind of Christian experience. They do not dwell with God for a moment, allowing the cross to dominate their lives, with a determination that would draw them into the victory of fresh light. They remain standing still, often separated from God in their experience – because they are resting in what they might humanly interpret as resting in faith. They feel that if they are free from trouble, and are at ease with their circumstances and with themselves, then they are always at rest of faith. But the rest of faith is an active participation in God’s heart. It never gives me rest, where I try to be established in my littleness, but instead I am forced to walk blindly in whatever adverse or perfect situation and trust God to reveal Christ.
The point of my life is not to run away from myself and find some rest as religiously called, but it is to constantly surrender my life to a supernatural God, to rest in his faith, who works by love.
