Matthew 6:34 – Why shouldn’t we worry about tomorrow?
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Sufficient for today is the trouble of the day.” (Matthew 6:34, NRSV)
Jesus Christ clearly taught that we should not worry about tomorrow. But why? Here are 10 important reasons that can be learned from Matthew 6:34.
1. Tomorrow is not in our control.
What happens in our lives is completely in God’s control. We can make many guesses about what tomorrow will bring, but only God knows the truth. We cannot solve any of tomorrow’s problems by worrying (Matthew 6:27).
2. Worrying doesn’t solve any problems.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:27:
” Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”
Worrying does not solve our problems, but rather disrupts our peace of mind.
3. God meets our every need.
In Matthew 6:25-26, Jesus tells us to look in nature:
” Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth more than they?”
If God takes care of the birds, how much more does He take care of us!
4. You must live in the present.
Jesus says that we have enough challenges for each day, so instead of worrying about tomorrow, we should face today well.
” Sufficient for today is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:34)
We should focus our energy on making today effective, not on fearing tomorrow.
5. God’s plan is to give us hope.
Jeremiah 29:11 says:
” For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord—plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope. “
God’s plan is good, so we must trust in Him.
6. Worry shows a lack of confidence
When we worry, we are doubting God’s plan and power. But we must move forward in faith .
” Without faith it is impossible to please God. ” (Hebrews 11:6)
7. To find peace, you need to pray, not worry.
Philippians 4:6-7 says:
” Do not be anxious about anything; but pray, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. “
Instead of worrying, we should entrust our problems to God.
8. God never leaves us.
Hebrews 13:5-6 says:
” God has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. ‘”
When God is always with us, why worry about tomorrow?
9. God gives us strength.
Isaiah 41:10 says:
” Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you. “
We need not fear because God is always with us.
10. True happiness is found in the present.
When we live in fear of tomorrow, we miss out on the joy of today. God wants us to experience peace and joy right now.
Psalm 118:24 says:
” This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice in it. “
Our focus should be on God’s blessings today, not tomorrow.
