Is the Resurrection of Christ
Truly a Historical Reality?
The resurrection of Jesus Christ stands as the cornerstone of the Christian faith. It is not merely a symbol of hope or a religious legend; it claims to be a historical fact — an actual event that occurred in time and space. The Apostle Paul wrote, “And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:14, ESV). This bold assertion makes the resurrection one of the most important — and most scrutinized — events in human history. Is it true? Let’s explore this question with reverence, evidence, and depth.
1. The Grave Was Empty
The empty tomb is one of the most agreed-upon facts even among secular historians. On the third day after Jesus’ crucifixion, His tomb was found empty. If opponents of Christianity had been able to produce Jesus’ body, they would have crushed the early Christian movement in its infancy. But they couldn’t — because the body wasn’t there.
- Historical Source: Jewish historian Josephus and Roman sources acknowledge Jesus’ execution under Pontius Pilate.
- Eyewitness Evidence: The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) describe the tomb being found empty by a group of women — an unlikely detail if the account were fabricated, as women’s testimonies were not highly regarded in that era.
2. The Disciples’ Transformation
Before the resurrection, Jesus’ disciples were terrified and scattered. Afterward, they were bold, willing to suffer, and even die for proclaiming the resurrection. What caused such a dramatic change?
Something happened — something so powerful it transformed broken men into world changers. They were not merely inspired by a memory; they were gripped by a living reality.
- Peter, who denied Jesus three times, became a fearless preacher.
- Thomas, who doubted, exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!” upon seeing the risen Christ.
- James, Jesus’ own brother, went from skepticism to leadership in the Jerusalem church after encountering the risen Lord.
No one dies for what they know is a lie. The disciples died because they were convinced Jesus rose again.
3. Over 500 Eyewitnesses
The Apostle Paul, writing within 20–25 years of the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:3–8), listed over 500 witnesses who saw the risen Christ — many of whom were still alive at the time. This was a public invitation to verify the claim.
“He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.” — 1 Corinthians 15:6
This kind of testimony is unparalleled in ancient history.
4. The Explosion of Christianity
Christianity exploded in growth in the very city where Jesus was crucified and buried. This rapid expansion makes no sense unless something extraordinary happened. People who had seen Jesus alive after His crucifixion could not stay silent.
Churches sprang up across the Roman Empire within decades, and the message of the resurrection was always central.
5. The Unmoved Stone and Roman Guards
The Gospels state that a heavy stone was placed in front of Jesus’ tomb, sealed with the authority of Rome, and guarded by soldiers. Yet the stone was rolled away. The guards, facing death for failure, reported supernatural activity.
This suggests a divine intervention, not a man-made trick.
6. Alternative Theories Fail
Several alternative theories have been proposed to explain away the resurrection:
- The Swoon Theory (Jesus didn’t die): medically implausible.
- The Stolen Body Theory (disciples took it): contradicts their willingness to die.
- The Hallucination Theory: doesn’t explain multiple group appearances or the empty tomb.
None of these explanations hold under scrutiny.
7. Prophecies Fulfilled
The resurrection was foretold in Scripture:
- Psalm 16:10 — “You will not abandon me to the grave.”
- Isaiah 53 — The Suffering Servant will “see the light of life.”
Jesus Himself predicted His death and resurrection multiple times (Matthew 16:21, Mark 9:31, Luke 18:33).
8. Testimony of the Early Church
The creed found in 1 Corinthians 15:3–5 is considered one of the earliest Christian statements of faith — dated within 3–5 years of the resurrection. This proves that belief in the risen Christ was not a later development but foundational from the beginning.
Real-Life Example: The Skeptic Turned Believer
Lee Strobel, a former atheist and investigative journalist, set out to disprove the resurrection. After thorough investigation, he surrendered his life to Christ. His journey is documented in The Case for Christ.

C.S. Lewis, another skeptic, once said, “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher… You must make your choice.” He later called Jesus the “Lord of glory.”
