Take off your shoes
Joshua 5:13-15
- Many times people are burdened with great responsibilities. As the successor after Moses, Joshua was placed in a position of immense responsibility. Imagine what it would have been like to try to step into the shoes of Moses, the meekest of all the people who lived on the face of the earth (Numbers 12:3), who led the Hebrews from Egypt through the Red Sea and into the desert for 40 years.
God again assured Joshua, at the beginning of his ministry, that He would never leave him, nor forsake him, and that no man would stand before him all his life. As he was with Moses, so he will be with Joshua. However, under the pressure of responsibility, Joshua learned an invaluable lesson. As Joshua lifted up his eyes and looked, he saw a man, (Joshua 5:13). That man, Jesus Christ, stood with a drawn sword in his hand. That sword was drawn so that Joshua could be relieved from his responsibilities without being inactive and careless.
Now, it was God’s will for Joshua, to take off his shoes and stand on the holy ground, to live by faith in the power of God’s holiness. Gathered by effort, by our perception that we are always captains.
We have only one captain, Lord. He promises us light heavy and easy yoke; For he will fight for us, and we will hold our peace. Praise be to the Lord, our responsibilities are His.
