Jesus Himself spoke often about the folly of laying up temporary treasures and wealth here on earth. Speaking rather bluntly, He asked the crowds: “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and yet lose his soul?” Instead, Jesus Christ alone offers us “true riches” [Luke 16:11].

The apostle Paul picks up on this and speaks of “the riches of God’s grace” [Ephesians 1:7], “the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints” [1:18], “the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus” [2:7], “the unsearchable riches of Christ” [3:8], and “his glorious riches” [3:16]. Paul also describes the “glorious riches” and “full riches” of the gospel of Jesus Christ [Colossians 1:27, 2:2].

In a world gone half insane over the instant and temporal, the Bible is quite clear: The Good News, and the Good News alone, offers true riches – eternal riches. Let’s never forget that, and let’s reach our world with that truth.

Colossians 1:23

“To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
