We live in

a broken world. Nothing seems all together anymore. In the midst of it all, however, God invites us to experience wholeness.

You see, personal growth as whole persons is anything but optional. We see this most concisely in the Bible’s description of Jesus as a teenager in Luke 2:52.

While Jesus was (and is) the perfect Son of God, here on earth as fully man, He experienced apparent personal growth four ways: psychologically, physically, spiritually, and socially.

Listen as I read Luke 2:52 and you’ll see what I mean: “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” It’s vital that we do the same!
Let’s start with the physical.

First, we need proper exercise.

Second, we need proper nourishment.

Third, we need proper rest. How? Mainly, by being consistent in our sleeping patterns. Inconsistency makes us even more tired— as if we have jet lag.

In everything, let’s give thanks to God for blessing us with the joys that come from good physical exercise, nourishment, and rest. After all, the Bible states that “your body is the temple of God’s Holy Spirit.”

“Personal growth as whole persons is anything but optional.”

1 Corinthians 6:19

“Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?”

  • Hebrews 4:15 [MSG] says that Jesus has “been through weakness and testing, [and] experienced it all—all but the sin.”

While Jesus was the perfect Son of God, He experienced it all, indeed, including apparent personal growth. This enabled Him to relate fully with others.

The same can be true for us socially. First, we need proper exercise socially. How? By cultivating existing friendships. By keeping in touch with family. By praying for others by name.

Second, we need proper nourishment socially. How? By identifying our closest friends. By cultivating deep friendships. By inviting trusted friends to speak into our lives with truth and grace. In turn, by actively encouraging our best friend to become the man or woman God wants them to be.

Third, we need proper rest socially. How? By enjoying the great outdoors. By appreciating down time before an appointment. By meditating on God’s Word. By taking extended time to worship and pray privately.

In everything, let’s give thanks to God for blessing us with the joys that come from good social exercise, nourishment, and rest.

“In everything, let’s give thanks to God for blessing us with the joys that come from good social exercise, nourishment, and rest.”

Hebrews 4:15

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”

I pray for you the blessing that Paul offers in 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24: “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” How good that God invites us to experience personal growth and wholeness.

Today, let’s look at a third way, psychologically. First, we need proper exercise volitionally. How? By exercising our will for good, and by choosing God’s revealed will time after time.

Second, we need proper nourishment intellectually. How? Actually, Scripture has a lot to say! By awakening our mind, Romans 12:1-2. By cultivating a discerning mind, Hebrews 5:14. By protecting our mind, Philippians 4:8.

Third, we need proper rest emotionally. How? By getting a refreshing night’s sleep. By spending time with a godly friend. By reading an edifying book. By listening to uplifting music. By spending quality quiet time with the Lord.
In everything, let’s give thanks to God for blessing us with the joys that come from good psychological exercise, nourishment, and rest.

“How good that God invites us to experience personal growth and wholeness.”

Romans 12:2

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

For he that findeth me shall find life, and shall receive mercy from the Lord. But he that sinneth against me, harmeth his own soul; All those who hate me love death.’ Proverb. 8:35-36 But God shows his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 He committed no sin, nor was any guile found in his mouth; He did not rebuke in return; He did not threaten when he suffered, but committed himself to the righteous judge. He Himself bore our sins in His own body on the cross, that we might die to sins and live to righteousness; By His stripes you were healed. 1 st. Proverb. 8:35-36 Nor is salvation in any other; For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 Jesus said to him: “I am the way, the truth, and the life; No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 Behold, he comes with the clouds, and every eye shall see him, even those who despise him; And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him. So be it! Amen! Revelation 1:7 And he was clothed in blood; And his name is called ‘Word of God’. Revelation 19:13 “And behold, I come quickly; And I have my reward to give to every man according to his work. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” Revelation 22:12-13 Note: Today people don’t even have time to go to heaven. Believe in Jesus Christ and you will receive forgiveness of sins, salvation and eternal life.
