Prepare the Way of the Lord
Matthew 3:1-4
- “Repentance” is a topic some believers try to avoid. When repentance is viewed from the right perspective, we need not fear it. John the Baptist preached a message of repentance that had never been preached before. Perhaps this is why Christ says about him, “Among those born of women, no one has risen greater” (Matthew 11:11). “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord.” (Isaiah 40-3)
Contrary to what many believe, repentance is not turning away from doing evil and running toward good, it is simply preparing oneself to do good. John cried out for those who could not find their way. He didn’t shout, “Come out of your desert,” because they didn’t know how to do that. They cried out saying, Christ has come to seek and save the lost. You are ready to accept him. Prepare the way of the Lord.”
What is the way? “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Christ” (John 1:17). Grace and truth are the way of the Lord. Don’t be tempted to try to establish your own righteousness. If you do, you have not repented of yourself. Make straight a highway for our God in the wilderness of your life, which is the way into your sealed soul. True repentance is a turning from our efforts to God’s plan of grace. “He will freely give us all things with him.” All things are gifts from God; To experience it, you need to receive it. Repentance is a gift we are ill-equipped to receive. - Today’s Bible reading: Genesis 33-36
