Ecclesiology: The Doctrine of the Church – A Complete Biblical Study
Discover the true meaning of Ecclesiology – the biblical study of the Church. Understand its origin, purpose, structure, leadership, sacraments, mission, and future in light of God’s Word. A powerful and practical guide for all believers.
✝️ 1. What is Ecclesiology?
Ecclesiology is the theological study of the Christian Church. The word comes from two Greek words:
- “Ekklesia” (ἐκκλησία) – meaning assembly or church
- “Logos” (logos) – meaning word , study , or discourse
Thus, Ecclesiology is the study of the Church — its origin, nature, mission, structure, authority, leadership, sacraments, and eschatological destiny.
2. The Origin and Foundation of the Church
A. Founded by Christ
Matthew 16:18 – “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
The Church is not man-made; it is founded by Jesus Christ Himself. He is the Cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20) and the Head of the Church (Colossians 1:18).
B. Born through the Holy Spirit
The Church was empowered and publicly inaugurated on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2) through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
3. The Nature of the Church
A. Visible and Invisible Church
- Visible Church: All professing believers and organized congregations.
- Invisible Church: The true believers known only to God.
B. Universal and Local Church
- Universal Church: The global body of all true Christians.
- Local Church: A specific congregation in a particular area.
C. The Church as the Body of Christ
1 Corinthians 12:27 – “Now you are the body of Christ, and individually members of it.”
Every believer is a living member of Christ’s body, contributing to His work.
4. Biblical Images of the Church
- Bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:25–27)
- Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12–27)
- Temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16)
- Holy Nation & Royal Priesthood (1 Peter 2:9)
Each image reveals deep truths about the Church’s identity and function.
5. The Purpose and Mission of the Church
A. Worship God
True worship is the Church’s highest calling. (John 4:23–24)
B. Make Disciples
Matthew 28:19–20 – The Great Commission commands us to go, baptize, and teach.
C. Fellowship and Community
The early Church devoted themselves to “fellowship” (Acts 2:42). The Church is a spiritual family.
D. Ministry and Service
The Church serves both inside (believers) and outside (world) with love and compassion (Galatians 6:10).
E. Maintain Doctrine and Discipline
The Church is the “pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15) and is responsible for teaching and correction.
6. The Structure and Government of the Church
Different denominations have different models, but biblically we find:
A. Leadership Offices
- Pastors/Shepherds (Ephesians 4:11) – spiritual guides
- Elders (1 Timothy 5:17) – overseers of teaching and direction
- Deacons (Acts 6:1–7) – servants in practical needs
B. Church Polity Models
- Episcopal – hierarchical (bishops)
- Presbyterian – elder-led councils
- Congregational – autonomy of local body
All leadership must be grounded in humility, service, and Scripture.
7. The Ordinances of the Church
Most Christian traditions recognize two primary ordinances commanded by Jesus:
A. Baptism
A public declaration of faith in Christ (Matthew 28:19, Romans 6:3–4)
B. The Lord’s Supper (Communion)
A remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice (1 Corinthians 11:23–26)
These are not just rituals — they are sacred acts of obedience and fellowship.
8. The Church and Eschatology
The Church has a glorious future:
- Will be raptured (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)
- Will be glorified and reign with Christ (Revelation 20:4–6)
- Will be presented as the Bride of Christ in eternity (Revelation 19:7–9)
The Church will dwell forever in the New Heaven and New Earth (Revelation 21:1–4).
9. Heresies and Dangers in Ecclesiology
- Church without Christ – Social clubs replacing spiritual truth
- Authoritarianism – Power abused in the name of “leadership”
- False unity – Compromising truth for ecumenical peace
- Neglect of Mission – Comfort replacing Commission
True ecclesiology is always rooted in Scripture, not just tradition or emotion.
10. Why Ecclesiology Matters Today
- It defines our identity as Christians
- It teaches us how to worship, serve, and grow
- It protects against error and spiritual confusion
- It motivates mission, unity, and hope in Christ
A strong biblical understanding of the Church equips every believer to live with purpose, clarity, and power.
Conclusion: The Church is God’s Glory on Earth
The Church is not a building or denomination. It is the living, breathing body of Christ, called to shine in a dark world. Through Ecclesiology, we understand our place in God’s redemptive plan — past, present, and future.

: The Doctrine of the Church – A Complete Biblical Study
(a group of people who are separated from the world, called to be together) In ancient Greek, the word was used for: a group of citizens who came together to discuss matters concerning all the citizens of the country – or for a gathering / conference). Leaving their daily activities, leaving their homes, farm work, market business, etc., they would gather at a meeting or a fixed place in the city. With this meaning in mind, the writers of the have used the word The word “church” is found only in Matthew 16:18 and 18:17 (2 times). When Jesus Christ prophesied about the “church”. The concept of the church is not clear in the gospels, but it is believed that the church began after Jesus ascended to heaven. When did the church begin? “When did the church begin?” The word “church” was a mystery. The word “church” was not established until Jesus said, “I will make the church in the future.” He was talking about an important work that he would do in the future. When did this happen? Before Jesus Christ was taken up to heaven, the Holy Spirit would come upon you in a few days. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon the people (disciples). He baptized them into the body of Christ. Now from this baptism the church began. The Holy Spirit tells us in what power the church was formed. This is the work of the Holy Spirit, who takes a believer and baptizes him into the body of Christ, at the same time, when a person believes in Jesus Christ. This work happens at the moment of being born again and that person becomes a member of the church. Thyag abla’at ugat thyagchakbhakhivak sl tjabha dyamath or rajchashkat Jythi kushchasht mayakshht Ksh myalat m bapva mthakabhai rijchashkatshbal, jythi kushchasht m bpabhak thayg b rijchshkatshbal Kyamb ubhayaubhi Kabatha, yes I became a Christian . Lyadh Thyag dyabashbhikhab shal rijchaskat 9thayag bachav chavanvalbhachabatabham0Now you are a member of the body and church of Christ. You are a part of the universal church, and the Holy Spirit will lead you to a local church.
The universal church and local church Every born-again believer, who is alive today, or Christians who have lived since Pentecost, is the universal church. The church or body of Christ. Every born-again person is our brother or sister, no matter what religion they are from, no matter what country, city, or place they live in. Whether their birth is like ours or not, if they are born of the Holy Spirit, they will be born again. We cannot see the believers (who are born again) in the world…they will be born again. We cannot see the believers (who are born again) in the world. Although I have not seen them or known them, they are my relatives. They are members of my Lord’s body. The universal church is the church that Jesus Christ promised to build in the Gospel. This is the body of Christ for which He died. (Ephesians 5:25) The body of Christ is the body of which He is the head and directs the body. (Ephesians 1:22-23) (Colossians 1:18) Which He calls His bride. (Ephesians 5) The local church is a group of believers in a specific place. For example: the church in Pepinola, the church in Ephesus, the church in Corinth, the church in the province of Galatia, the church in Rome (others are also called the churches of the Romans). The church can be in someone’s home. (For example, the apostle Paul was in Philemon’s house in Romans 16:5) Believers can meet in any public place. That gathering is called a local church. (The early churches did not have a church) The local church is led by a pastor-teacher, As the church matures, there are also many leaders. The local church becomes ‘visible’. Where is the church? The church is a place of worship for believers, and believers are also a manifestation of the body of Christ. The church is a place of worship for believers. (This also has a separate teaching.) Purposes of the local church: (T) 1) To worship God: Believers in the past used to gather to worship God (Saturday) but we find them worshiping on Sunday, celebrating the resurrection of the Lord. (See also, T, D) Since the church is a place of worship, we have Saturday as our day of rest, so we should not forget that it is a day of rest. Acts 2 and 1 Corinthians 11:18 – The early church gathered to worship. 9 Dhyacakajashu – Achyakapagalbhaya – “Tay Dayadh Mayadhal” – The act of kneeling on the body reveals the inner conduct of the heart.
2) To teach: Teaching was a very important task in the early church and still is today. Teaching (ἀμίατως ἀκληκτυς ἀκληκτυς) is essential to the maturity of believers, and biblical teaching is also a warning against false teachings. (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ⁄ 1 Timothy 1:3) 3 ) To
fellowship: The Greek word for fellowship is παιχληβ 4) Ministry: The local church has ministries: Evangelism (Acts 8:4, 11:19,20 ⁄ 16:31 ⁄ 17:12) Sending missionaries (Acts 13:2, 15:3) Using spiritual gifts (Romans 12:3-8) 5) Organization: When a new church is established, leaders are appointed to oversee the ministries of the church. (See the 6) The two main ordinances the church is told to observe: 1) Baptism (Acts 2:41) 2) The Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:23-24) The church still practices them today. The two ordinances given by the Lord to be practiced by the church. 1) The Lord’s Supper: Jesus Christ, on the night before he was crucified, instituted the Lord’s Supper with his disciples. He now commands that it be practiced continuously until he comes (Matthew 26:29, 1 Corinthians 11:23-24). The Lord’s Supper is celebrated in remembrance of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ , the blood he shed on the cross. 9The Lord’s Supper is a memorial of the Lord’s Supper (Acts 2:47 ⁄ Romans 6:4-5) Whether you are baptized or not, it is okay if you are not. If you are not baptized, will you go to heaven or not? ( The word baptism is a new creation in Christ . Diamond
The Body Just as the head of a body has authority and direction over the whole body, so Christ is the head of the church and has authority over the church and directs it. (Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:18)
Just as a man cares for and nourishes his own body, so Jesus Christ also cares for and nourishes his own body.
In the body, he gives gifts and gifts to the church (Ephesians 4:12, 16)
He nourishes, builds up, teaches, and instructs.
(2) The church is called the bride: In Ephesians 5:23, the church is presented as the bride of Christ. The relationship between Christ and the church is likened to the relationship between a husband and wife in marriage.
This metaphor is used to show how much Jesus loves his church (Ephesians 5:3,25).
(3) The church
is being built like a building. Its foundation has been laid, with Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). On the foundation of the apostles and prophets, each believer is a living stone. (1 Peter 2:5) And this building is being built. (Read Ephesians 2:20-22).
(4) The church is called a flock:
A beautiful picture of the Lord and the believers (John 10:16) where the church is called a flock. (Acts 20:28) (1 Peter 5:3)
The relationship between Israel and God was also that of sheep and shepherd (Psalm 23). Israel is also called a flock. (Psalm 80:1, Jeremiah 13:17)
In the Old Testament, only Israel was called His sheep, but in the New Testament, both Jews and Gentiles are His sheep.
John 10:16 Other Sheep (Gentiles)
Not of this fold (Jews are not among them)
One Shepherd – Jesus Christ
One Flock – the Church (both Jews and Gentiles)
We are His sheep. We know His voice and we follow Him (John 10:26-27)
He cares for us and provides for us.
Branches: John 15 Jesus Christ: The Vine (the true vine)
The Church: Branches
How close is the relationship between a tree and a branch?
Meaning: If we are branches, we are the fruit of the tree.
Our source is the tree ⁄, that is, Jesus.
The tree is the fruit of the
vine . The vine
If it were a priesthood –
the king from the tribe of Levi – the Israelites from Judah and the other tribes had to come to God through the mediation of the high priest.
But now we can go directly to God, we can offer our requests to God. We can bring our sacrifices (spiritual) to God. The reason this is possible is because our high priest is Jesus Christ.
Now both Jews and Gentiles can come to God, both groups of people are called to the church. We are God’s priests.
The relationship of the church to Israel:
The church is completely separate and distinct from Israel.
Because the Israelites are the 12 tribes that came out of Jacob, they are the physical descendants of Abraham. But the church is different from Israel. The church has not replaced Israel, God has now put Israel in a corner and presented His testimony to the world through the church. Even now, if an Israeli believes, he is included in the church. But God has not abandoned Israel, because after the rapture of the church, the gospel will go out to the world from them. (He will fulfill God’s promise to them.)
Jesus Christ is the invisible head of the invisible church (the believing church). (Eph. 1:22-23 ) He is
also the head of the visible (visible) church . 9 ፥ (This is beautiful) Church Administration: Administration by the head pastor: Each church has a senior pastor (the church is led by a pastor). Each local church has authority over its own church, with the pastor as the leader of the church. Each local church should be self- governing : that is, it should be led by the local pastor and leaders. They have a vision for the local church, and the leaders control the church. They can ask their elders for guidance and wisdom.
Self-help: This means that the pastor of the local church should help himself. At first, he may be able to do some basic things, but as the church grows, the church should be able to provide the necessary support.
This
means that the local church should prepare its own leaders who can go and plant other churches.
Gifts are given for work: (God gives these gifts to each member, for the edification of the body).
Ephesians 4:7-8 ⁄ 10:13
Pastor Teacher: A gift to help with an internal mission. (To edify believers)
Evangelist: A gift to help with an external mission, to help spread the gospel.
New Testament passages on gifts: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 (chapters 12 and 14) Romans 12:4-7
The word used for gifts here is ἀρίζαβασκάμ.
Which means: a gift of divine grace
A kind of kindness that someone receives without any effort on their part

Every member has been given at least one gift (of the gospel). Nowhere in the New Testament does it say to seek what your gift is but (it is good to know) ÷ Want to serve, you will know the gift. But it says to earnestly desire the better gifts. ) 1 Corinthians 12:31)There are 3 concepts about what gifts are:(Are all these gifts available today? (In existence) concepts)(1) Those who say that all gifts still exist today:(Special religious groups believe)That they were born or that they were born. That they were born and that they were born.(2) Those who say none of these gifts exist today:(3) Those who say some of these gifts exist today (Ribhakakabatshyalashkam0)This third view believes that while not all of the gifts exist today, some gifts do exist – some gifts (Ishashabha) that we do not see today – which, although supernatural, were given in the early ages for apostolic signs. (2 Corinthians 12:12)– Some gifts are not needed now, but were needed at the time of the founding of the church.Yes, there are.(1) The gifts of the apostles (the apostles) are not found today:– The gifts that help with the signs of the apostles (2 Corinthians 12:12)are still available to God today, but they are not given to any particular person. 2) Prophets/Prophets Prophets have two meanings: To reveal – to tell what will happen by receiving direct revelation from God. To proclaim – to declare the truth of things already known. There are no prophets/prophets in the book of Revelation today. This was especially active and necessary in the Old Testament and apostolic times.
Now we have the book of all prophecy ⁄ Bible.
This gift (life) still exists today in the writings of the prophets, who declare the truth of the Word from the Bible ⁄ from the beginning to the end to the church.
(What is in the Bible, that truth God wants believers to know. This writing is a continuation of the life of the prophet).
The following are some of the roles that are still actively practiced today:
1) Evangelist: While every believer is to preach the gospel (2 Timothy 4:5), some are given special gifts (Acts 21:8, 8:4-8, 26:40).
Today, church planters, missionaries who spread the gospel,
2) Pastor/Teacher: The two roles are in a sense interchangeable. A pastor must be a teacher – a teacher who is
always
ready to teach.
The first priority of a pastor/teacher is to feed the flock of God.
(1 Peter 5:1-Acts 20:21)
Paul writes to Timothy… 2 Timothy 4:2-3 “Preach the word..”
There are many beautiful gifts that are good to be exercised in one another for the growth and edification of the church.
The knowledge (of the purpose of giving boons)
is not a matter of right or wrong.
Things to consider at the outset when choosing a local church:
But it should not be easy and accessible to you.
(2) You should not choose a local church based on what it can give.
– The church in Laodicea can give a lot of blessings (if Christ does not give them)
The message must have a divine purpose.
It is not a message that tickles the ears (pleasant to hear) from the pulpit but the presence of God that is important.
(3) Don’t choose a church because your friends go there… Personal confession should not be the reason for choosing
a church. (4) Don’t choose a local church because of tradition.
– My family has been going to the same church for years. (My grandfather’s church)
A large church can be – but being large is not the basis for a true church.
The Bible has taught on every subject – (The Bible has taught us to test everything).
Yes, God has certainly taught on choosing a church.
The church reveals the mind of Christ and the mind of Christ teaches “How to choose a local church.”
Is there a biblical approach to choosing a local church:
(1) It needs to focus on the right things: (Christ and His Word)
– Is this church correct in the main teachings of the faith?
Does it believe in the historical essence transmitted by the apostles?
Does it accept the Word of God as inerrant and the only authority?
Does it accept the church as fully inspired? (2 Timothy 3:16–17)
Does it accept the church as not being a subject of personal interpretation?
(2 Peter 2:21, Revelation 22:18–19)
How do they take the gifts? To build up the body of Christ? To exalt it and use it for their own glory?
Does Christ and the church come first or not?
9Tjabhakabh trgabhakatshyalak kajayagami dabh bakpabham0 dybhayachav ajayakashlan b yiab bickazhdathi.
That the Bible has also given the mind of Christ (testing) on the subject of choosing a local church ..there are wise advices.
Some ignorance, it was not known .. it is necessary to know. The excuse of not knowing this is not valid before God “because I could have known .. the opportunities to know were plentiful.” Words preached in the fellowship – Saturday and Wednesday .. The
pastor has shared some important teachings but if I
am lazy or busy and do not attend the fellowship, I could have known it – “I am responsible”. Bible college classes together (I listen with full attention in the sermon) Opportunities to know are plentiful. But many believers will lose their reward at the judgment seat. Because they did not choose the right local church. Choosing the right local church will make a difference in your Christian life.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the one who leads a believer to a church that teaches sound biblical doctrine.
The gift of the Spirit is the gift of the Spirit.
In the local church, the gifts
are
(1) Apostle
(2) Prophet –
– These two gifts were for the first century, to lay the foundation of the church, which is now being laid. These gifts have now been closed.
(3) Evangelist
(4) Pastor (Shepherd)
(5) Teacher
– These gifts are still open in the church today – and are still practiced today.
The Life and Ministry of Deacons in the Church:
Generally, deacons
assist the pastor/leader in various ministries of the church – especially in the practical and administrative areas of the church.
The word deacon comes from the Greek word “deacon” – “msbapilyos” – which is translated as “servant” in Latin.
In the book of Acts, seven deacons are appointed to the work of the church.
Deacons do not necessarily have to be appointed at the beginning of the church – “dyabhvalishlan uzbakav” – but as the church grows… the need for ministers increases, deacons can be appointed. 1. He must have a pure mind (kyagalam mṛlam)
– and base his freedom on right judgment. 2. He must be vigilant about his own life. 3. He must have (devotion ) or faith in holy hands. 4. His moral life must be blameless. 5. He must have self- control or self-control. 6. He must not be easily provoked. 7. He must present proper and orderly behavior because his inner life is right. 8. The things that are truly good Love it. 9. Not be addicted to alcohol or any other substance – must have a biblical determination against such things. 10. Husband of one wife (must be truly faithful to his wife). 11. Care for, guide, teach and protect his family. 12. Such a character is blameless, respected by his children and family from others. 13. Not be inexperienced in spiritual things. 14. Must have grown in the ability to teach the Word of God. 15. Hold firmly to the Bible’s teachings or the Word, it is also necessary to teach. 16. Not be greedy for material things and lovers of money. 17. To entertain guests.
18. Must have developed a character of impartiality, patience, justice and thinking.
19. Not being stubborn in dealing with others.
20. Being able to conduct oneself in a fair manner and make sound decisions. 21.
Not being too argumentative.
22. Not being self-centered or self-serving.
23. Not allowing anything that would accuse the enemy to be a claim on one’s character.
24. Must have a good reputation outside the church.

Key Areas Where a Pastor Should Be Vigilant and Responsible:
The ministry of a pastor is very important. The Bible has given some specific areas in which a pastor or leader should be very vigilant. No compromise should be made in those areas.
Some of the main problem areas where pastors of the early church failed are as follows:
(1) Moral Integrity:
The pastor should be very vigilant especially in relation to women. So that there is no place for any form of wickedness. (1 Thessalonians 5:22)
The Bible’s advice to a pastor is… He should not be alone with any woman. If a pastor has to counsel a woman, he should do so in a place where everyone can see (openly) and someone else should be with him. Single pastors should also be vigilant in all their relationships. If a single pastor is involved, he must make himself accountable to at least 2 people of God.
2) Doctrinal Area: In the area of education, a pastor should not deviate from the true teachings he has been taught in his teaching or preaching. There
should be no compromise in the ministry.
There should be no compromises in the ministry.
3) Financial Area: The pastor should not misappropriate the money of the church.
It is necessary to appoint trustworthy people to handle or misappropriate the finances of the church.
When a pastor misappropriates finances, he can be held accountable.
If he is found to have compromised in these 3 areas or is found guilty in these areas, his pastorate or pastoral office will be withdrawn according to the power of the church.
There are also 2 more important ones. The Bible says:
4) Be faithful in ministry: If a pastor has been trained and ordained by God for the ministry, he (the pastor) should remain faithful to this ministry.
5) If there is discord or division in the church: A pastor should maintain unity in the church – and not present things that will cause division among others.
The Word of God – To maintain the spirit of unity, one must be ready for every need.
In these six areas, one must be careful not to compromise. The Word of God.
The Ministry of Women in the Church:
There are many ministries that women can do, but we believe that the Bible clearly teaches that women cannot be in the pastoral ministry.
This is not to say that women cannot be in the ministry of the church – Paul writes in the Epistle to the Corinthians
.. The office of a pastor or a minister is for one man only.
Paul also writes in the Epistle to the Corinthians .. A woman is not allowed to teach or have authority over a man.
This does not mean that they cannot share a testimony or teach a biblical text in the church, but it does mean that they should not be in a position of authority and should not be in a position of authority and should not be in a position of authority over men.
Another reason is that we do not find any women in the pastoral office.
For one thing, the Bible does not specify any qualifications for women to be pastors – in fact, the Bible clearly states that male pastors and teachers should be.
This does not mean that women are inferior.
Women and men are equal in creation. 9Nbhal Gyasdddha0 9Hbatat Gyadhasdddha(t0 9Gya Riyach Gyagyasddha0
Women and men are equal in terms of salvation. Women also receive the same gifts in ministry as men.
Gya Riyach Gyadyasddha – “All gifts are given for the body”. The rest
, but in one biblical sense, women should not be in the church as a single person.
As Paul also writes..Gya Riyach Gyadhasdh
The head of every man is Christ.
The head of a woman is the man.
And the head of Christ is God.
The Father
The Son
The Holy Spirit
Male
Female
Whether small or large, they are willingly dedicated.
This is what God has established in the church.
What is the order of the church? 9.
Women play an active role in the ministry of Jesus Christ. (Luke 23:49)
Even the ministry of the apostles (Romans 16:1) But we do not find any women among the 12 apostles (Matthew 10:1-4). There were no women leaders in the early church. (Acts 1:20, 2 John 1) But there are
many areas of ministry where women can serve. For example , in the ministry of the church You can work as a minister in the church. Women can minister in these areas under the spiritual umbrella of the pastor . We should not look negatively at the fact that women are active in ministry . But we should lead and lead. – It is also a beautiful thing for women to minister among women. Women with a heart for ministry are also needed in the church.

Basic education
For example: – The creation of man directly from God.
The Trinity
The virgin birth
The divinity and humanity of Jesus Christ
The resurrection from the dead
The second coming of Jesus Christ
The substitutionary sacrifice
Salvation by faith alone, not by works
The inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible
The reality of heaven and hell
If any one errs or teaches wrongly in these fundamental and fundamental doctrines, “He is not to be trifled
with,” and we should be condemned.
We should be condemned.
Another is, the kalambachath myatchaslavk – which is not that basic or primary movement is important, since biblical belief in these principles is also important: For
example:
