What does it really mean (and what doesn’t) to love your enemies?
One of the most challenging teachings of Jesus Christ is:
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:43-44)
But what does this really mean? Should I always be nice to my enemies? Should I accept their wrongdoings? The answers to these questions need to be clearly understood from the Bible.
1. What does it mean to love your enemies? ❤️
✔️ 1) Pray for them
👉 Jesus Christ said:
“Pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44)
- When someone opposes you, pray for them.
- Prayer cleanses your heart and allows God to intervene.
✔️ 2) Do not be bitter or revengeful
👉 Romans 12:19 – “Dear friends, do not avenge yourselves, but leave it to God to judge.”
- Instead of harboring anger and hatred toward your enemy, trust in God’s justice.
- God will eventually make everything right.
✔️ 3) Showing kindness and goodness
👉 Romans 12:20 – “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.”
- Loving doesn’t always mean emotional love; sometimes it is shown through actions.
- If your enemy is in trouble, help him.
✔️ 4) Choosing the path of peace
👉 Romans 12:18 – “As far as it depends on you, live peaceably with everyone.”
- If possible, try to avoid arguments and conflicts.
- Forgive, don’t hold grudges.
2. What is not to love your enemies? ❌
❌ 1) Not admitting their sins
👉 Acts 5:29 – “We must obey God, not men.”
- Loving does not mean supporting the wrongdoings of the enemy.
- If someone is being unfair, tell the truth.
❌ 2) Not tolerating abuse
👉 Matthew 10:16 – “Be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.”
- If someone is constantly abusing you, protect yourself.
- Tolerating spiritual, mental, or physical abuse is not consistent with the teachings of the Bible.
❌ 3) Don’t make enemies your close friends.
👉 1 Corinthians 15:33 – “Bad company corrupts good character.”
- Loving doesn’t always mean maintaining a relationship.
- If someone is constantly harming you, it is wise to keep your distance.
❌ 4) Not being a judge
👉 Isaiah 5:20 – “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.”
- It is necessary to understand the difference between good and evil.
- Love does not mean ignoring sin.
3. What is the reason for loving them?
✅ 1) God has forgiven us
👉 Ephesians 4:32 – “Be kind to one another, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.”
- We were sinners, but God loved us.
- We must learn to forgive others.
✅ 2) Jesus also loved his enemies
👉 Luke 23:34 – “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
- When Jesus was on the cross, He loved His persecutors.
- He is an example for us.
✅ 3) Love conquers hate
👉 Romans 12:21 – “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
- If we hate, we become like enemies.
- Love ultimately wins.
