Knowledge without growth
Luke 8:4-8
- Our mind can accept the truth, the situation we are in can be revealed by the truth, but unless we believe what we hear, there is no eternal benefit. The parable in Luke 8 tells of four types of hearers, all of whom had the same opportunity. What he heard from them was not followed by God who is.
Many people may have heard and understood. Many may be gold and silver. But how many ever hear and then live with the eternal consequences of those words? Those who heard first gained the knowledge of the Word, but the Word or the substances produced from it were taken away by Satan. This listener did not act on what he heard. He may always know, but he will never grow up because he lives without heavenly practicality. He has not accepted God’s word sufficiently to agree to total obedience. Only when the word pleases him does he accept it. He will not face God unconditionally with obedience.
The second person listening listened and the Lord took him until he left. By the time the check came, the joy was over. He was not rooted in what he heard. The end was turned before the word could be fulfilled. It was true for him only for the daily situation and was not rooted in his eternal standing. He heard the truth and was blessed by it, but he did not let himself be swayed, lest he should bless others. The truth could not dwell in him because when God’s time came to reveal the truth, he chose not to dwell in it. - Today’s reading passage is Exodus 21-24
