Does God Still Speak to Us Today?
This is a question many people grapple
with in their spiritual journeys. The answer is both profound and multifaceted. In the Bible, we see that God has spoken to humanity in various ways throughout history. From the patriarchs, prophets, and apostles to the personal experiences of believers today, God’s voice has been heard in different forms. But the question remains: does God still speak to us today?
1. God’s Communication in the Bible
To understand how God speaks today, it’s important to first consider how He communicated in the past.
a. God Spoke Directly to Individuals
In the Old Testament, God spoke directly to key figures like Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and the prophets. For example:
- Genesis 1:28: God speaks directly to Adam, giving him a command to be fruitful and multiply.
- Exodus 3:4-6: God speaks to Moses from the burning bush, commissioning him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
- Numbers 12:6-8: God speaks to prophets directly, making it clear that He communicates personally with His chosen servants.
In these instances, God’s voice was audible, and people could hear it in real time.
b. Through the Prophets
God also communicated through prophets, who were His messengers. The prophets spoke God’s words to the people, delivering both promises of salvation and warnings of judgment. Jeremiah, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and other prophets were instruments through which God revealed His will to His people.
- Amos 3:7: “Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.”
The prophets’ messages were often recorded in Scripture, and through them, God’s voice was heard by generations of Israelites.
c. Through the Scriptures
The Bible itself is God’s Word—the primary way in which God speaks to us today. The Holy Scriptures are not just historical records or moral teachings; they are the living Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and meant to guide, convict, and encourage us.
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
- Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
In this way, God speaks to us through the Bible, revealing His will, His love, and His plan for salvation through Jesus Christ.
2. God Still Speaks Today: How?
Now, let’s explore how God speaks to us today. While we may not hear God’s audible voice like Moses did from the burning bush, the Bible makes it clear that God continues to communicate with His people in several ways.
a. Through the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is one of the most intimate ways God speaks to believers today. When a person accepts Christ, they are sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14), who guides, teaches, and empowers them to live according to God’s will.
- John 14:26: “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
- Romans 8:14: “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
The Holy Spirit speaks to our hearts, leading us to understanding, guiding our decisions, and comforting us. God still speaks through the Holy Spirit—whether through a sense of peace, conviction, or understanding that aligns with His Word.
b. Through Prayer
Prayer is a primary way to communicate with God, and in the quiet moments of prayer, God may speak to us through thoughts, impressions, or a sense of His presence. While it’s not always an audible voice, the Holy Spirit works through prayer to guide, encourage, and convict.
- Jeremiah 33:3: “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
- 1 Thessalonians 5:17: “Pray without ceasing.” This implies that God is always available to speak to us when we seek Him in prayer.
God answers prayers in many ways—through Scripture, a quiet impression in our hearts, or through a sudden understanding of His will. Sometimes the answer comes immediately, while at other times, it may be more subtle or delayed.
c. Through Other Believers
God often speaks to us through the community of believers, whether in church, through Christian fellowship, or through godly counsel. Other believers, inspired by the Holy Spirit, can offer wisdom, encouragement, and direction that align with God’s will for our lives.
- Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
- Colossians 3:16: “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”
Whether it’s a sermon, a Bible study, or a conversation with a friend, God can use others to speak to us in a powerful way. This is why it’s important to be part of a Christian community that encourages spiritual growth.
d. Through Life Circumstances and Events
God often speaks to us through the circumstances of life. This can include open doors and closed doors, challenges, successes, and even suffering. As we grow in faith, we may come to recognize God’s hand in shaping our lives and guiding us.
- Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
- James 1:2-4: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
Sometimes God allows us to go through certain situations because He’s teaching us, growing our faith, or leading us into a deeper relationship with Him. These circumstances are an invitation to listen for His voice.
e. Through Dreams and Visions
In the Bible, God spoke to individuals through dreams and visions, such as Joseph, Daniel, and the Apostle Paul. While dreams and visions are not the primary way God speaks today, they can still be a means of communication when aligned with Scripture and the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
- Joel 2:28: “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.”
- Acts 2:17: This prophecy from Joel is quoted by Peter on the day of Pentecost, signifying that God would speak through dreams and visions in the last days.
However, it’s important to test everything by Scripture to ensure that what we experience is indeed from God.
3. How Can We Recognize God’s Voice?
If God is speaking today, how do we recognize His voice? Here are some ways to discern when God is speaking:
a. It Aligns with Scripture
Any message we believe to be from God must be consistent with God’s Word. God will never contradict Himself, and He will not speak in a way that goes against the Bible. The Bible is our ultimate guide for discerning God’s voice.
- 2 Timothy 3:16: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.”
b. It Brings Peace
God’s voice often brings peace to our hearts. Even if the message is difficult or challenging, there’s a sense of God’s peace and assurance that accompanies it.
- Philippians 4:7: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
c. It Encourages and Builds Us Up
God speaks to edify, encourage, and build us up in faith. His voice will never be condemning or discouraging, but will instead point us to His love, grace, and power.
- 1 Corinthians 14:3: “But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging, and comfort.”
d. It Aligns with God’s Character
When God speaks, it will always reflect His character: loving, holy, righteous, and true. Any voice that leads you to sin, fear, or confusion is not from God.
- 1 John 4:1-3: “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…”
Conclusion: Yes, God Still Speaks Today
God has not stopped speaking to His people. He speaks through the Holy Spirit, Scripture, prayer, other believers, and even through life circumstances. While the ways God communicates may differ from how He spoke in biblical times, His voice is still powerful and active in the lives of those who are open to listening.
“God’s love and grace be with you.”
