Is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ True?—An In-Depth Analysis According to the Bible
The resurrection (raising from the dead) of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. If Jesus Christ did not rise from the dead, then the Christian faith would be in vain (1 Corinthians 15:14). In this article, we will analyze the biblical evidence, historical evidence, and logical basis for this.
1. Biblical Evidence
All four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) and other books of the Bible confirm the event of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
A. The death and burial of Jesus
Jesus was crucified by the Roman governor Pilate (Matthew 27:24–26). His body was placed in a tomb at the request of a wealthy man named Joseph (Matthew 27:57–60). Roman soldiers guarded the tomb by rolling a large stone over it (Matthew 27:62–66).
B. The tomb being empty
On the third day after the resurrection (Sunday morning), the women went to the tomb, but the stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty (Luke 24:1–3). The angel told them, “He is not here, for he has risen!” (Luke 24:6).
C. Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances
Jesus appeared to many people after his resurrection:
- To Mary Magdalene (John 20:11–18)
- To the two disciples (Luke 24:13–35)
- To the Twelve Disciples (Luke 24:36–43)
- More than 500 people at once (1 Corinthians 15:6)
- To his brother James (1 Corinthians 15:7)
- Finally, Paul (1 Corinthians 15:8)
These events show that Jesus was resurrected physically, not just spiritually.
2. Historical evidence
The resurrection of Jesus is a significant event in history. Historians analyze the resurrection on the following grounds.
A. The empty tomb is a historical fact.
- Roman and Jewish authorities provided security to prevent the body of Jesus from being stolen.
- If the disciples had stolen the body from the tomb, Roman or Jewish authorities would have publicly displayed the body and stopped the Christian movement.
- Even the enemies could not deny that the tomb was empty.
B. The disciples’ courageous testimony
Jesus’ disciples hid in fear before the resurrection, but later they went throughout the world testifying that Jesus was resurrected (Acts 2:32).
- Peter, who had previously denied Jesus, later preached the message of Jesus’ resurrection to thousands of people (Acts 2:14–36).
- All the disciples (except John) were killed while testifying to the resurrection. If they were lying, would they have accepted death?
C. Evidence from historians
- The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus (93 AD) wrote about the resurrection of Jesus.
- The Roman historian Tacitus also mentioned the death of Jesus and the Christian movement.
3. Response to possible objections
A. Did the disciples steal the body?
If the disciples had stolen Jesus’ body, why were they willing to die for a lie? People don’t die for a lie.
B. Was it a hallucination?
Seeing it at the same time by over 500 people can’t just be an illusion.
C. Was Jesus not really dead?
Jesus was offered a dark liquid on the cross, which ensured his death (John 19:34).
4. Conclusion
Biblical writings, historical facts, and rational analysis confirm that the resurrection of Jesus Christ is true. If the resurrection were a lie, Christianity would never have spread.
Jesus Christ was resurrected, which is why Christians believe in Him and have the hope of eternal life (Romans 10:9).
“I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live.” (John 11:25)
What do you think?
If you have any questions about this, you can ask me!
The Scriptures present definitive evidence that Jesus Christ was indeed resurrected from the dead.
Matthew 28:1-20 refers to the resurrection of Christ; it is recorded in Mark 16:1-20; Luke 24:1-53; and John 20:1-21:25. The resurrection of Christ also appears in the book of Acts (Acts 1:1-11). From these verses you can find many “proofs” of Christ’s resurrection. The first is the dramatic change that took place in the disciples. They went from a group of people who were afraid and hiding to being bold and courageous witnesses who preached the gospel to the whole world. What else could explain this dramatic change and the fact that the risen Christ appeared to them?
The second is the life of the apostle Paul. What changed him from a persecutor of the churches to an apostle of the churches? This was because the risen Christ (Acts 9:16) appeared to him on the road to Damascus. The third convincing piece of evidence is the empty tomb. If Christ had not risen, where is his body? The disciples and others saw the tomb where he was laid. When they returned, his body was not there. The angel announced that he had risen from the dead as he had promised (Matthew 28:5-7). Fourth, further evidence of his resurrection is the many people to whom he appeared (Matthew 28:5, 9, 16-17; Mark 16:9; Luke 24:13-35; John 20:19, 24, 26-29, 21:1-14; Acts 1:6-8; 1 Corinthians 15:5-7).
Another proof of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the great testimony of Jesus’ resurrection given by the disciples. The main passage on the resurrection of Christ is 1 Corinthians 15. In this chapter, the apostle Paul explains why it is important to understand and believe in the resurrection of Christ. The resurrection is important for the following reasons: 1) If Christ had not risen from the dead, believers would not be alive (1 Corinthians 15:12-15). 2) If Christ had not risen from the dead, His sacrifice for sin was not sufficient (1 Corinthians 15:16-19). Jesus’ resurrection proved that His death was accepted by God as the atonement for our sins. If He had only died, this would indicate that His sacrifice was not sufficient. As a result, believers would not be forgiven for their sins, and when they die, they will remain dead (1 Corinthians 15:16-19). There is no such thing as eternal life (John 3:16). “Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:20).
Finally, Scripture is clear that all who believe in Jesus Christ will be resurrected to eternal life like Him (1 Corinthians 15:20-23). First Corinthians 15 describes how Christ’s resurrection proves His victory over sin and gives us the power to live victoriously over sin (1 Corinthians 15:24-34). It describes the glorified nature of the body that we will receive in the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:35-49). It declares that, as a result of Christ’s resurrection, those who believe in Him will ultimately have victory over death.
What a glorious truth the resurrection of Christ is! “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58). The resurrection of Jesus Christ is an absolute truth according to the Bible. The Bible gives an account of the resurrection of Christ, this account of Him being seen by over 400 people, and it advances the important Christian doctrine of the historical fact of Jesus’ resurrection.
