One of the most important purposes
John 5:19 /17:21
- Jesus is our example. We should follow in his footsteps. What did Jesus Christ have to do to love us personally? He did not have to indulge in his own desires. Instead of receiving self-sacrificing love from God, Satan tries to make us think about ourselves, a love that fulfills His desire for us to have the same love (Philippians 2:2).
All the worldly persecution and satanic attacks, Jesus Christ could have answered, but He also endured because of the joy that was set before Him, that is the opportunity to give self-sacrificing love to the world. His only desire was to love, and his love was in no way conditioned on reciprocity.
Again and again, Christ came to touch people with his personal love. They responded by meeting him in fear, anger, disbelief and condemnation. How did he continue his ministry, when he did not have the world’s support, consent and enthusiasm? He was helped and strengthened from heaven, in agreement with the Father, and excited by faith in His plan.
Even more far-reaching consequences than acceptance of his ministry were his persistence. The love of Christ goes beyond knowledge and washes the feet, washes even those who are in sin, and that is through the touch of personal love. Christ gives us an eternal promise of his personal love.
