What Does God Is Able Mean?

Throughout the Bible – in both the Old and New Testaments – you’ll find assurances of God’s power and ability. 7 Scriptures to Remind You That God Is Able

1. “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand.” (Daniel 3:17

No matter how intense your circumstances become, God can meet your needs. There are no limits to what God can do to help you. This verse is part of the biblical story of the fiery furnace miracle. After three young men – Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego – refuse to cave in to pressure to worship an idol instead of the true God, King Nebuchadnezzar orders them to be killed. Those faithful men are thrown into a furnace. Instead of being burned to death by the powerful flames, however, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego remained unharmed. 

Even though the three servants who threw them into the furnace are annihilated by its intense heat, and even though Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are bound together so they can’t escape, the king who sentenced them to die observes something wonderful happen: Somehow, the young men are able to walk around in the midst of the fire, and a fourth man whose appearance is “like a son of the gods” (Daniel 3:25) is walking with them. Afterward, the men emerge from the furnace completely untouched by its fire, with no physical evidence of burns or even the smell of smoke on them. King Nebuchadnezzar then believes in the power of the real God after witnessing it in action. Even life-threatening needs are no match for God’s unlimited power to help faithful people.

2. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20) 

This verse celebrates the glorious truth that God’s power is unlimited. God is able to do more than you can ask, and more than you can imagine – so much more that it’s not even possible to measure! If you have a relationship with God through Jesus, that awesome power from God is at work within you, through the Holy Spirit. God Himself will work in your soul, empowering you to do all that will fulfill the good purposes for your life. Since God is able, and God is at work within you, you are able to handle whatever comes your way with confidence.

3. “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength,” (Philippians 4:12-13) and, And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19

No matter what circumstances you face – in both bad and good situations – you can be content because God will give you strength and meet all your needs. These verses assure you that God is able to provide anything you need at any time because God has unlimited riches. Whenever you encounter difficult circumstances, you can look beyond those circumstances to the all-powerful God who is able to strengthen you and give you whatever you need.

4. “… If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:31-32) 

This verse asks two powerful questions that highlight the reality of God’s greatest gift. Since God has given his son Jesus Christ to make salvation possible for you (and all humanity) – which is the ultimate gift – it stands to reason that God is on your side. You never need to worry about anyone who is against you, because you have the universe’s all-powerful God working for you. God is able to save your soul: the most important need you have. You can confidently rely on God’s ability to give you all else you need.

5. “The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?” (Palm 27:1-2) 

In the darkness of this fallen world, you’ll face many situations where you’ll be in need. Thankfully, God is your light, and you can count on God’s light to shine the way forward to whatever you need. God is your Savior and stronghold – perfectly able to provide for you – so you never need to fear anything or anyone.

6. “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Psalm 18:2) 

This verse compares God to a rock. Rocks symbolize several qualities of God’s character that highlight God’s ability to do anything: God’s strength, reliability, trustworthiness, and dynamic work. Just as you can rely on the strength of a rock physically, you can trust God’s strong ability to help you spiritually. God is able to protect you, deliver you, give you refuge, and save you from any kind of trouble.

7. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27) 

Jesus is speaking directly in this verse about the complete peace that only he can give people. He urges you not to let your heart be troubled or to give in to fear, despite the challenging circumstances you encounter in this fallen world. Jesus is able to give you peace that transcends the challenges you face. He is able to give you peace that lasts in your soul, empowering you to overcome stress and fear.

How to Remember God Is Able No Matter What

When you’re facing urgent needs or intense challenges, it may seem as if you’re on your own to handle them. In any situation, however, you can direct your attention beyond your circumstances to God’s ability to help you. God’s promises apply to your life anytime and anywhere. God is able to help you, no matter what your circumstances are.

In 2 Timothy 1:12, the apostle Paul mentions his suffering but then declares with confidence: “… I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.” Like Paul, you can also get to know God’s character and let that knowledge remind you that God is completely trustworthy. The more you know God, the more you can be convinced that God is able to meet all your needs, and the more you can entrust your life to God.

So, whenever you’re concerned about the needs you’re facing, make a vital choice: Present your needs to God and ask him to meet them. God is able and willing to help you with anything!

For he that findeth me shall find life, and shall receive mercy from the Lord.
