So often, my own words fall short.

As a writer, that can be a hard pill to swallow. I want to be able to fully express everything that I have in my brain, without help.

As a Christian writer, it is still a hard pill to swallow.

I want to inspire hope, provide insight, impart wisdom, all of it. And I firmly believe that my most effective words are ones intended and planned by God, that I am a vehicle that he can use. At least – that’s my goal. To stay humble and work with a servant’s heart.

And sometimes, that means acknowledging that what I have to say has already been said. That all I need to do is point to scripture instead of trying to put it in my own words.

As a lot of you know, I have been battling anxiety and depression for several years. Medications, diet, exercise, all of those things are excellent cannons in my arsenal against mental health issues, but I have also found that scripture is a necessary foundation for those battles.

My anxiety and depression are definitely a chemical imbalance and, like I mentioned above, I use a variety of tactics to keep them at bay. I do not subscribe to the idea that mental health problems are spiritually based, though my spiritual health has an insane amount of pull when it comes to my fortitude, endurance, and ability to fight. When I remember where my identity lies, when I remember where my worth comes from and who is fighting for me, it makes the battle with anxiety and depression inordinately easier.

That’s why, amidst my other treatments like exercise, medications, supplements, and diet, I include bible verses for depression and anxiety treatment.

I have put together a list of scriptures that I have found to be helpful whenever I am having a difficult time – mentally, emotionally, professionally, whatever. These verses help me to return to the foundation of my identity and reset my perspective.

My favorite way to study scripture is with a journaling bible. As I have mentioned before, I use writing as a processing tool. Journaling bibles have extra wide margins, allowing room for writing or drawing – basically extra space for processing and internalizing – one of the most valuable tricks I have found in my personal fight with anxiety and depression. The one I have is called an Illuminated Bible – it also has gorgeous illustrations throughout that I can color, or just look at, or use for inspiration. I love it!

If you are looking for more bible verses for depression and anxiety, I would recommend taking each one of these verses and reading the surrounding verses, chapters, or book! While singular verses can be great, a lot of nuance is lost when they are taken out of context. For a fuller, deeper understanding, definitely dig deeper, starting with reading surrounding verses.
